FAQs
Here, we’ve compiled a list of answers to some of the most common questions our visitors ask. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please don’t hesitate to contact us for assistance.
-
What age do I have to be to come on this tour?
You must be a minimum of 14 years old to ride an electric bike in this country and therefore 14 is the minimum age you can be to come on this tour.
-
Can I cancel my booking and get a refund?
Yes, so long as you cancel up until a week in advance you will receive a full refund. If you cancel between a week and 48 hours before the tour is due to start you will receive a 50% refund. No refund will be granted for cancellations within 48 hours of the booked tour. (Execeptions may be considered in extreme circumstances).
-
What will be in my packed lunch, and do I have to pay extra for this?
You will be able to choose your own packed lunch as you complete your booking. Packed lunches are sourced from local business Bruces Stores and offer a variety of products including vegetarian and vegan lunch options. Please ensure you note any dietary requirements. The expense of the packed lunch is included in your E-tour Orkney fee.
-
Can we still use the bikes in poor weather?
For the most part yes. The bikes can be used in light to moderate rain conditions. However, unfortunately the bikes are not suitable to use in heavy rain and/or very windy conditions. We will do our best to get out on the bikes at every opportunity. In the event of very poor weather conditions, we will conduct the tour by bus and follow the same itinerary.
-
Is there a lot of traffic where we will be cycling?
Birsay (the tour location) is certainly one of the quieter areas on the Orkney mainland. Although this is in the middle of a farming community, traffic is much quieter here than elsewhere, but you must show consideration with regards to passing traffic on single lane roads as it may require coming to a stop on the bike to allow them to pass. There is no need to worry about this though as tour guide Daniel will make this all clear in the briefing and instruct when the group must stop for the traffic.
-
Does the tour always take 6 hours?
The times which are on the itinerary are just a guide. However, we will be doing our best to follow these times as closely as possible to ensure you can plan the rest of your day too. For example, if you must reboard your cruise liner for 3pm and the tour is due to finish at 3:15pm, please make this known to E-tour Orkney as we can aim to get back to Kirkwall slightly earlier to tailor to everyone’s needs. Contact us by email to voice any concerns you may have.
-
How far will we cycle?
The tour route will cover roughly 12.5 miles. Don’t worry if that sounds too far! The bikes can do most of the work for you – depending on the level of pedal assistance that you select. You can either make the journey a workout or a leisurely pedal – it’s up to you.

Is there a discount for juniors?
Yes, juniors aged between 14 and 18 are eligible for a discount. Please note that an adult will be expected to attend with any under 18s and will be responsible for their care. Under 18s will also be expected to have proof of age on their identification document.
